Simply Perfect Festivities
Home Ideas Magazine - December 2017
“Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas-time.”
Laura Ingalls Wilder
What do you like best about the holidays?
Many of us recall the magic and wonder we felt as children, and those of us who have children, nieces, nephews or grandchildren have the opportunity to relive those feelings.
However, adults have more to worry about than whether Santa will bring the right Lego set or My Little Pony. It’s our job to pull off a holiday without a hitch, which can include planning, shopping, cleaning, wrapping, decorating, traveling, baking, entertaining, and more, all while fulfilling our current responsibilities and remaining cheerful.
Whew! No wonder we’re often tired at this time of year! That’s why we’re in favor of simplifying what we can, making smart use of our time and remembering to take care of ourselves!
“I believe the greatest gift you can give your family and the world is a healthy you.”
Simple styling endures and inspires
While we still love traditional holiday styling, we’re seeing more customers lightening their own loads by choosing pieces that transition effortlessly from early fall to the new year. The coppers, bronzes and golds of autumn become the shiny metallic of Christmas with just a few tweaks.
Use accent pillows and throws in these warm colors to create a rich tapestry of textures. Not only do they feel inviting, but they echo similar colors on the tree.
Bronze and copper balls, gold poinsettias, wooden deer horns, jeweled ribbon garlands and special, creamy antiqued mercury glass ornaments sparkle and shine all within a controlled color palette. Add antique, gold-accented books, decorative bronze stags and a lamp with brass tones for accents.
The effect of a family of rich neutrals is calming. You’ll see bright Christmas lights, outdoor decorations and wrapping paper everywhere this season. And you’ll love coming home to a more simple, understated space, without visual clutter, that allows you to relax and re-center yourself.
"Sharing the holiday with other people, and feeling that you’re giving of yourself, gets you past all the commercialism."
Celebrate the season in comfort
There was a time when holiday entertaining meant uncomfortable chairs, scratchy upholstery, bland food, elevator music and a girdle. Aren’t you glad that era’s behind us!?
Your home styling sets the baseline for everyone’s comfort level during the holidays. A cozy corner starts with soft, inviting chairs and a unique, reclaimed wood coffee table with a soapstone top. Placing shiny surfaces next to matte textures creates interest and depth.
Behind the chairs is a stunning bookcase, lit from within, in aged pine with a charcoal finish, and seeded glass doors.
Velvet Plush Pumpkins in our warm neutral colors add shine and softness. Use them in early fall in one arrangement; for Christmas switch to a metal tray adorned with greenery.
A chessboard provides both decoration and entertainment, placed strategically to engage your guests.
“Christmas is a time when you get homesick – even when you’re home.”
Because everyone loves food
Want to eat bread and jam in the dining room? Go right ahead. A cutting board placed inside a metal tray provides a multi-purpose surface.
Ceramic stoneware plates made in Portugal by Juliska have an heirloom feeling. The natural artwork on these special plates was inspired by twigs gathered by the designer’s grandchild during a woodland walk.
Handpicked, gourmet, private-label Plum’s products include preserves, butters, jellies, mustards, dips, glazes, relish, salsa, toppings and more. These small batch products provide affordably delicious ingredients for at-home cooks to create quality appetizers, entrees and desserts.
A hammered brass and pewter pitcher holds the beverage of your choice. Cloth napkins in deep jewel tones bring festive color to the tray.
Under the tree we’ve placed our favorite Mauviel cookware. Founded by Ernest Mauviel in France in 1830, this professional copper cookware is used everywhere from fine restaurants to Parisian cooking schools. The high-quality copper heats uniformly, giving you unsurpassed temperature control, and all pieces are highly durable and nonreactive.
“Family isn’t an important thing. It’s everything.”
