Simply Perfect Black and White

If you’ve visited with me, or even overheard me, for more than 60 seconds, you’ve probably heard me mention the importance of simplicity.
I always advocate for simplicity in home interior design because it’s calming. And that’s critical because we’re all being pulled in dozens of directions at once.
Your home should be where you can relax and rejuvenate your spirit. If your décor is busy, it won’t be soothing and refreshing.
One of the best ways to bring simplicity into your home is to begin with a foundation of black and white. It functions as a neutral palette that allows you to experiment, alter and transform your space.
Take a Seat
Black and white chairs are available in a variety of styles and looks. A woven tribal design in onyx with exposed nail heads is comfortable and sophisticated. Pair it with any number of black and white throw pillows for a unique style.
We’ve nicknamed the black and white hounds tooth chair “the Jackie O chair” because it’s so classic and polished. This woven chair can be dressed up for a formal look or dressed down for a more casual style.
Another black and white chair features a charcoalstriped slip-cover in durable cotton canvas. It’s a more contemporary style, well-suited for a loft, apartment or sunroom.
Take Another Look
A distressed wood occasional chest evokes a vintage aesthetic while serving as a useful piece in a living space. Atop this multipurpose piece, place equally neutral accessories, such as a black and chrome gear-shaped clock, a cast iron thimble or Monopoly car and perhaps a simple, bright fl ower arrangement.
A chubby lamp with black shade and black, distressed glass base features a decorative, round glass fi nial and a double chain.
The Art of Fabric
Use black and white throw pillows on black and white furniture – or on other neutral colors, such as leathers. Available in many beautiful fabrics and designs, black and white pillows dress up any chair or sofa.
On black and white furniture, mix and match black and white patterns, or use a throw pillow of another color, such as pale orange or beige. What’s fabulous about throw pillows is that they’re simple and affordable – yet they can have a major impact on a room.
Black and white rugs can visually hold together the room. Again, they create an elegance and classic look that’s hard to rival.
Drape a black and white throw on a chair or sofa for an instantly inviting, comforting feeling. The throw’s soft texture adds a warm and welcoming message.
The Art of Art
Hanging black and white pieces on your walls seems almost counterintuitive. After all, one of the reasons for neutral walls is to set off artwork. Yet black and white paintings, etchings, drawings or prints create the ideal backdrop for a serene and calming space. Add those small pops of color, in the form of fl owers or accessories, and watch your room become distinctively vibrant.
