In which areas did you concentrate at first?
When I first got in the building industry in 2005, I worked at the front counter of a lumber yard where I learned the difference between a 6d nail vs 8d nail; plywood vs OSB, 2x4 vs 1x4, etc. I eventually worked my way up to drawing, estimating and delivering people’s dream homes. Helping people navigate through their cabinet options was always my favorite part of the process.
What do you find most rewarding about your day-to-day business?
What I find the most rewarding about my job is the working relationships I’ve built with repeat customers and contractors over the past few years; that really helps in this business.
I also enjoy being able to help homeowners through a kitchen/bathroom remodel. Most homeowners have not been through a remodel and don’t know the first steps to take. There is a lot of planning that needs to be done before jumping in. With a 30-minute conversation, I can usually get a general idea of what they are looking for and can provide them with the direction they need to get the job done right.
What is the latest trend in your industry?
Some current trends in cabinetry are:
- To design a hutch or island to look like a piece of furniture. (see picture)
- Internal/organization accessories that go inside cabinets; the options are endless! (see picture)
- Perimeter cabinets (cabinets along the walls) a painted grey, and the island a different color paint or a rustic, stained wood. (see picture)
- Grey, blue, white or a dark stain are the latest color trends in cabinetry.
- A shaker style, or a flat center panel, is the most used cabinet door style lately.
Who had the biggest influence on your career choice?
My parents had a huge influence on my career choice. They started up and ran a successful lumber yard which is where I first learned and fell in love with cabinet design just over 10 years ago. They’ve taught me that hard work, persistence, and a positive attitude can take you far in this career. Being raised by my parents has engraved in me a strong work ethic, and I owe most of my career success to them!
Where do you go for fun?
The pickleball court, the park with my kids, any campground to get away and unwind with my family, and a warm beach in January or February.
How do you spend your spare time?
My spare time is dedicated to my family. Having a husband in school full time to become a teacher and two kids in elementary school keeps us busy! Time goes so fast, and I feel it’s important to keep family first. It’s great to work with a company that respects that.
Who do you strive to emulate?
I strive to be a better version of myself each day.
What is your biggest obsession?
My biggest rule of thumb while working with a client is to LISTEN. A pet peeve of mine is speaking to a salesperson who is more focused on what they are going to say next than what you are telling them. I truly believe a person can earn SO much respect from someone just by listening.
In the case of a house fire, what is the first thing you'd save?
Obviously I’d save my family members and dog, and if I had time I’d grab the computer with all the pictures on it.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Attitude is everything; SMILE! And when life gives you lemons, add sugar and make lemonade!
