McKennan Park, Sioux Falls’ oldest developed park, is known as the crown jewel of the park system – full of rich history and stunning details. It’s only fitting that this historic home, renovated last year by Deffenbaugh Homes, mirrors that concept.
Architectural integrity is observed the moment you walk up to this fascinating home in the McKennan Park area. The original brick porch, complete with a metal railing, sits below the original awnings. Blue flower box planters rest beneath the windows, adding a refreshing pop of color against the cream exterior. Established hostas surround the brick porch, naturally leading you through the welcoming blue-grey front door.
Once inside, you’ll understand the significance of the massive full interior renovation Deffenbaugh Homes completed. The home, built in 1915, flawlessly blends old with new. Oak hardwood floors have been refinished throughout the main level, and windows have been replaced to match the original architectural look. Several walls on the main level have been removed, resulting in a new main layout featuring an open floor plan.
The living room, once closed off, is now spacious and bright. Three large windows add character and allow light to stream in to the living quarters. The fireplace was built with existing brick and enhanced with intricate, blue-painted casing. Crisp, white built-in shelves frame the fireplace feature, emphasizing the importance of this piece of art.
The functional kitchen and dining area sit near the living room, making main floor living incredibly easy. A thick Walnut live edge countertop rests on a huge blue-painted island, illuminated by a trio of simple gold pendants hanging above. Four industrial stools sit at the island, offering a stylish place to rest after a long day.
White cabinets line the kitchen wall, accented by counter-to-ceiling polished white subway tile and undercabinet lighting. Metallic gold hardware gives the kitchen a unique old-meets-new style. Dark soap stone countertops distinctly contrast against white cabinets and a white apron kitchen sink. Resting on the counter is a charming tray – small yet significant. Inspiring notes from previous homeowners, found beneath layers of wallpaper, are proudly displayed. The dining area sits just off the kitchen, overwhelmed with light from a sizable window, new in its original casing. A live edge Oak dining table is complemented by six metal chairs and an oversized gold orb light fixture.
Previously a porch, an office sits behind the living room. Thick white millwork and soft taupe walls create a calm retreat. Two walls of windows and the exposed brick chimney bring character to this home office, making office work anything but boring.
A dramatic powder room is also on the main level, just off the kitchen. A black vanity contrasts with a white and grey counter, and black blinds pop against stark white casing. A large brass mirror hangs on black and gold foil damask wallpaper.
Back through the living area, a restored staircase featuring panel wall details and a blue-painted banister leads guests up the refinished wood stairs. It’s not surprising that Deffenbaugh Homes left no detail unattended to on the second level of this established home.
To the left, a small bedroom was converted to a spacious full bathroom. Moroccan-inspired tile adds an unexpected flair with hues of greys, blues and browns. Light gleams from an elegant light fixture, instantly brightening up the space. A white vanity, complemented by sleek chrome hardware, hosts a blue-flecked countertop. A convenient laundry room is located near the bathroom, just inside a gorgeous vintage French door. Slate appliances contrast with grey low-maintenance flooring, giving the space a fresh, clean feel.
Between the master bedroom and the master bathroom, homeowners have plenty of opportunities to relax at home. The Deffenbaugh Homes team masterfully converted a sleeping porch into an enormous, comfortable master suite. Two full walls of windows offer unmatched views and an incredible amount of sunlight. A walk-in closet, also previously part of the sleeping porch, is full of natural light, as well. Shoe storage, a bench, and custom built-ins ensure everything has its place. Exposed brick from the main level fireplace adds character to the airy closet.
Character is also found in the details of the master bathroom. A grey painted vanity, topped with a white and grey counter, rests on elegant hexagon-tiled floors. Polished white patterned subway tile and floor-to-ceiling hexagon tile cover the back wall of the walk-in glass enclosed shower. A teal-painted ceiling and a fashionable vanity chair add color and personality to the refreshing retreat.
A child’s room – one of the only rooms in the home that maintained its original shape – is also located upstairs. Between the dazzling chandelier and the massive windows, there is no shortage of light in this large bedroom. A relaxed guest room completes the second level. Soft yellow walls and large windows eagerly welcome guests into this cheery space.
The exterior of this home offers expansion opportunities like no other. A massive yard and mature trees are the foundation for an entertainer’s oasis. An abundant garden in the corner of the backyard adds a charming touch.
With over three decades worth of experience, the Deffenbaugh Homes team knows what makes a house a home: creativity and quality. This home renovation project required an established team of craftsmen, and Deffenbaugh Homes delivered. The team left the homeowners with a historic home they can cherish for years to come.
